Revamped blend is now available
Tiant, a Marianao, Cuba native, amassed 229 career wins striking out 2,416 batters along the way. His stint in Boston was a memorable one as he had suffered a fractured right scapula just a few years into his career and some thought Tiant was done for. But then the Boston Red Sox signed him in 1971 and after a rough first season he brought the funky cheese in 1972 winning 15 games with a league best 1.91 ERA. He also won the Comeback Player of the Year award. Around this time he started to be referred to as “El Tiante,” a nickname that has lasted to this day.
After 8 seasons in Boston, including two 20-plus-win seasons, Luis Tiant finished out his career pitching for several clubs on the way to solidifying himself as one of the greatest pitchers to ever come out of Cuba—or any place for that matter. Now in retirement El Tiante has decided to master a second pastime that Cuba is known for: cigar making.
“Now in retirement El Tiante has decided to master a second pastime that Cuba is known for: cigar-making.”
He teamed up with his son Daniel, who serves as CEO, and the two went into business. After making their cigar-world debut a few years ago they decided to recruit fellow Cuban José “Pepin” Garcia to revamp the blend. The new blends feature two acclaimed cigars; Habano Oscuro and Habano Rosado.
The new El Tiante cigars have been on fire, literally. While they are only sold in the Northeast as of now there is nationwide demand for the brand. Some well known online cigar shops are even sold out of the Tiante Group Cigar products.
In one interview, Luis Tiant noted, “My first smoke was when I signed a contract playing baseball with the Mexico City Tigers.” Well thanks to a grassroots campaign to elect him into the Baseball Hall of Fame which is steadily growing— in large part thank to a strong Facebook following—Luis “El Tiante” Tiant may have the chance to light up a cigar of his own to mark that occasion as well.
