We can shape our community for the better…
THE SMALL TOWN I GREW UP IN was recently rocked with a mid- October snowstorm that left more than half my town without power for many weeks, the other half under water and to this day debris still lays in the streets. Because of this unexpected crisis I have witnessed the members of my hometown come together to support one another as they rebuild and recover. Because of witnessing this very touching moment in my hometown’s history this year I am more inspired than ever to spend the holiday helping others.
With so many ways to help, so many people who need help it is hard to decide where it is I want to lend a helping hand this December.
This past Thanksgiving I wanted more than anything to help with the South End Neighborhood Action program, which gave out turkeys to over 90 families in the Boston neighborhood.
Unfortunately (and fortunately) the amount of individuals who wanted to volunteer for the turkey giveaway was overwhelming because when I called to secure a spot I was turned away because all their spots were filled.
With my sights set on putting in some volunteer time before the next major holiday approaches I have turn to one of my new favorite organizations: the web based non-profit Boston Volunteers at www.bostonvolunteers.org.
With over 60 organizations from the Greater Boston Area featured and broken down into easily navigated categories I have found my search to do good to be as easy as it is to help someone in need.
From hunger to the homeless, crisis relief, youth, women’s needs, elderly and health, the site provides information on how you can contribute to issues that you are passionate about.
For business owners, the site has an option to promote your business by listing the organization, relevant fundraising events and announcements. It even goes to length to promote and showcase its competitors; Boston Cares and Boston Volunteer Bridge, two sites that lack the user-friendly layout of Boston Volunteers.
With so many difficulties that we face right now as a society it is important that each of us remember that as a community we are able to shape our future and what defines us. I look forward to finding where I will be laying my support this year and with the help of BostonVolunteers.org I’m sure to lend my hands to several causes.
