For anyone who has not been to a gym or watched late-night TV lately, Zumbais one of the hottest fitness crazes around. Based on Latin dance moves and rhythms, this high-energy, low-impact aerobic exercise is fast and funky and fun. Many people do it multiple times each week and apparently cannot get enough!
“Zumba is a fantastic aerobic workout,” says Membership and Marketing Manager Yhinny Matos, “and most importantly, it’s fun!” Combining moves from dances like the Calypso, Cumbia, Merengue and Salsa, along with some martial arts and other ingredients, Zumba gets your heart rate up and your feet and body moving while it also helps improve coordination and tone your entire body.
For those who already love it and want more or for those who might want to try it, The Salvation Army Kroc Center Boston (www.boston.salarmykroc.org) is offering a two-hour Zumbathon from noon-2 pm on February 18 that is free and open to the public.
Located on over six acres near Dudley Square, The Kroc Center is the largest health, fitness and community center of its kind in New England. Offering everything from art to water slides and from classical music lessons to rock climbing (as well as a fully-furnished, state-of-the-art gym and other amenities), the Center offers plenty of space to gather and grow for the entire community.
When asked how she came up with the idea for the Zumbathon, Matos explains that, as Zumba is so popular, she wanted to “open up the experience to more people.”
While the Center offers a wide array of events, Matos says that this is their first official “-athon.”
“We have been open for less than a year,” she explains, noting the Center will mark the occasion in March with even more great programming, “so we hope to hold more events like this in the future which allow the community to experience the programs and classes we have to offer.”
In less than one year, the Center’s Zumba classes have become one of the most popular group exercise classes at the Center. “Our classes are often full to capacity,” Matos explains, noting that the Center’s trained instructors (three of whom will be present for the Zumbathon) are always happy to introduce their art form to new Zumbi-sts.
As the Zumbathon will be held at the Center’s NCAA regulation-sized basketball court, there will be plenty of room for everyone. “It accommodates 200 people,” Matos says. “We hope to have a big and enthusiastic crowd!”
