The Tyler-Taylor Tally Mid-Season Report 2.0: Bruins’ Seguin Shining

alt
alt
alt
LAST YEAR, BST&N CHRONICLED THE seasons of 2010 number one pick, Edmonton’s Taylor Hall and number two pick Boston’s Tyler Seguin. The 2010-2011 regular season was a tale of two cities as Edmonton finished dead last for the second year in a row and Boston won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 39 years. Hall’s year was cut short due to injury (42 points in 65 games) and Seguin’s season was mediocre at best (22 points in 74 games).
However, Seguin showed flashes of brilliance during the postseason highlighted by his four point performance during Game Two of the Eastern Conferences Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Seguin finished the post season with seven points in 13 playoff games.
Seguin enjoyed his summer being a Stanley Cup Champion, but soon focused on the season coming on the horizon. Tyler Seguin entered a rigorous training program and added 10lbs to his frame. He was now stronger and more potent.
Seguin landed on the second line with Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand and blossomed. He started the season like a man possessed as the Bruins shook off the “Stanley Cup Hangover” and were on fire. The sensational sophomore did hit a small rut in his play and was benched because he missed a team breakfast in Winnipeg. It was a humbling and embarrassing moment for the young sniper.
After a heart to heart talk with Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, Seguin became re-focused and reinvigorated.
Tyler Seguin finished the first half the season leading the NHL with a +34 plus/minus which is a testament to his improved defensive play. Seguin is also tied for the team lead in points with 19 goals and 24 assists in 46 games.
The NHL has noticed and recognized Seguin as a rising star. He was selected to his first All-Star game this year in Ottawa. He landed on Team Chara after sweating out the fantasy draft and going in the second to last round.
Seguin played over 15 minutes and recorded one assist by setting up Toronto’s Joffrey Lupul.
He really enjoyed his experience as expressed in his tweet:
@tylerseguin92
Had a blast tonight. Last night in ottawa then back to boston in the morning. Was a great weekend.#asg2012.
There is no reason to believe the second half of the Seguin’s season won’t be as exciting as the first.
The Edmonton Oilers Taylor Hall has had a tougher run at it this season. After a promising start, the Oilers have plummeted to 14th in the Western Conference. If that wasn’t bad enough, Hall received a scary cut during a collision during pre-game warm ups which required 30 stitches. Hall has missed some games due to the injury.
The overall number one pick in the 2010 NHL draft is looking to rebound during this season’s second half. In 39 games this season, Hall has recorded 16 goals and 17 assists with a -5 rating. He is currently fourth overall in team scoring.
Thus far this season, it looks like Seguin and Hall have had role reversals from their rookie campaigns. Seguin is maturing and progressing at a rapid rate where it seems Hall has stagnated a bit. Environment is a major factor for both players as the Boston Bruins as stacking with talent and are looking to defend their title. The Oilers are a very young team with an exciting core with the likes of Hall, Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins. The Tyler-Taylor Tally 2.0 will be back at the end of the season to recap the seasons of Tyler Seguin and Taylor Hall, two players that will be linked forever.
